OUR STORY

About the Farm

Clean food from our hands to yours, that’s it.

Two Hands Farm is a small-scale, earth-conscious homestead in Cumberland, ME. We grow many varieties of vegetables and flowers, raise free-range chickens and ducks for eggs, and are welcoming 3 dairy goats to our homestead this year. We use no-till raised beds that are entirely hand-tended and thoughtfully farmed using organic techniques to ensure the health of the soil we work. By farming, we wish to create a healthy, productive and meaningful lifestyle for our family while rooting deep into and nourishing our community. Check out our Farm Store to find our veggies and more.

At the farm’s new home in Cumberland, we are excited to employ practices such as a no-dig market garden using deep composting, integrative livestock management with rotational grazing of pastured chickens and ducks, and holistic farm management with the addition of pollinator hedgerows, heirloom fruit & nut orchards, and native plant habitats for wildlife. These practices not only benefit the land, but also produce the most nutrient-dense and delicious food a farm can offer.

About Us

Two Hands Farm is a small family homestead run by first-generation farmers Jess and Vanesa and their son, August. They started the farm in 2022 on leased land as a means to provide nutritious food for their family and their community.

About Jess

With a background in early childhood education, Jess’s interest in sustainable agriculture started when she was working at Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture as a farm camp instructor. She was immediately drawn to learn from the farming apprentices alongside her campers about holistic agriculture and its importance in creating a long-term sustainable vision for our planet and our food systems. After many years in the teaching field, Jess spent 2 years managing a farm in Hawaii and knew she wanted to start a homestead of her own. When the family moved to Maine, the stars aligned and the homestead farm dream became a reality. When not in the field, you will most likely find Jess in the kitchen preserving the harvest for the cold winter ahead, reading barefoot on the porch about plants and chicken breeds, or sewing a new outfit for her son August.

About Vanesa

Vanesa always likes to joke that she became a farmer through marriage but the truth is she is incredibly knowledgeable about plants and full of practical know-how. She grew up in Mexico on a farm until she was 5, running with cows in the pasture and chasing chickens for their eggs. Vanesa keeps the farm running behind the scenes, working on things like spreadsheets and paperwork, which Jess is eternally grateful for. When not in the field you can find Vanesa cooking up the latest harvest in a delicious, usually Mexican, fashion, making her son August laugh, or playing around with vintage cameras. You might also find her at her computer snuggled up with the family dog, Beau, working her full-time job as a Software Engineer.

About August

Farmer August turns 2 in March and has grown up on the farm eating dirt, growing veggies, and giving all his love to the chickens and ducks. You can find him eating green tomatoes, climbing dirt piles, or feeding the animals.
